Daniel 4:37, “Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.”
Nebuchadnezzar is speaking, and he makes this statement just verses after he spent seven years grazing as a cow. He realized that in the area of pride and humility. You can put yourself up, and God will bring you down OR you can keep yourself humble, and God will lift you up. James 4:10 says, “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up,” and Proverbs 16:18 says, “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”
It is unfortunate that Nebuchadnezzar learned this lesson by experience. He was so proud and lifted up that God had to humble him. The good thing is that we have people like Nebuchadnezzar to learn from. We don’t have to learn the lesson through our own experiences. I’ve heard people say that experience is the best teacher, but in reality, someone else’s experience is the best teacher. Why should we have to make mistakes when we can learn from others that made the same mistake. Let us remain humble and allow God to lift us up instead of lifting ourselves up, and God having to humble us. I Peter 5:6 says, “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:”
