John 8:28, “Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.”
People thought that Jesus was doing things of Himself. They thought that He had His own agenda as to why He did what He did, but that was not the case. Jesus was following the will of His Father.
If Jesus, Who is perfect, didn’t do His own thing, we have no excuse to do our own thing. We should not go through life doing our own thing and having our own agenda. We should not try to draw people to us. We should not be doing it for ourselves, but people should see that what we do is all for God. When people look at us, they should see God. It should be clear what the purpose behind what we do is.
I love the song, “Hide Me Behind the Cross.” The last phrase says, “Hide me behind the cross, so the world sees only you.” It’s not about us; it’s about the Lord. John 3:30 says, “He must increase, but I must decrease.” When the Lord increases in our lives and we decrease ourselves, it will be clear that what we do is not of ourselves but it is of the Lord.
