James 4:8, “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.”
This verse is a two part process. There are two sides to it. There’s our side, and there’s God’s side. Our part is to draw nigh to God, and God’s part is to draw nigh us. If we do our part, there is not question that God will do is because God always does what He says He will do.
We must desire to draw nigh to God. The more we want it, the more effort we put into it. I’ve had the privilege of helping assistant coach our school’s basketball team. In practice, we were working on rebounds. They were doing alright, but there was room for improvement. Coach said that if the defensive player gave up a rebound, they had to do 10 pushups. It was amazing the increased effort that was then put into getting those rebounds. Afraid of the punishment caused them to want it for.
Now I tie that together with the above verse. With drawing nigh to God, it’s not about a punishment we receive for not doing it. It’s all about the fellowship that we DO receive for drawing nigh to God. Fellowship with the Father is an indescribable thing. If you’ve never experienced it, I urge and challenge you to fully commit to it. Don’t let anything get in the way of you and God. Let us strive to work harder each and every day on drawing nigh to God. If we do, God will certainly draw nigh to us.
