Numbers 35:34, “Defile not therefore the land which ye shall inhabit, wherein I dwell: for I the Lord dwell among the children of Israel.”
The Lord is speaking to Moses. He is giving Moses instruction that Moses will give to the children of Israel. He commanded them not to defile the land. They are not to defile the land because God dwells there. If God gives us something, we ought to be good stewards of it, but we ought to be even better stewards of it if God dwells there.
We know that God is omnipresent meaning He is everywhere, but there is one specific place that seems to constantly be defiled in this world. That place is the house of God–the church. The word defile means to make unclean. Too many people in today’s world are defiling the house of God. They care more about drawing crowds than they do about honoring God. The bring in their own music, their own dress, their own agendas, etc., instead doing what the Bible says.
Another place the Lord dwells is inside of us. As a born-again Christian, we have the Holy Spirit living inside of us. He is their to help us live right and to guide us, yet too many Christians are defiling their own heart with the things of this world. The pleasures of this world are only for a season. Give them up before it is too late. I would much rather have constant joy than the pleasures of sin for just a season. We need to strive to live a holy life. Let us keep from defiling the place where the Lord dwells and use that place as a means of bringing honor and glory to God.
