As the Hart Panteth, So Panteth My Soul

Psalm 42:1, “As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.”

This is a wonderful verse, and there is a song based on this verse called, “As the Deer.” The verse talks about a hart, or a deer. It talks about how the deer pants and longs for water. As the deer desires and longs for water, so should our desire and longing be after the Lord.

A deer cannot go a long time without water. An adult deer drinks water about 3 to 5 times a day. They constantly need it to keep going. The same should be true about us and the Lord. We should not go a long time without the Lord. The longer a deer goes without water, the more they desire it. The longer we go without the Lord, the more we should desire Him.

If a deer goes without water, it will die. As a Christian, if we go a long time without the Lord, we will be spiritually dead. We need God in our lives to be spiritually alive. Comparing a deer’s need for water with a Christian’s need for the Lord is such a simple comparison, but it is a good one. How’s your desire for the Lord?
