In the Multitude of Counsellors, There is Safety

Proverbs 11:14, “[14] Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.”

I want to focus on the second part of this verse today. This is a verse that many people try to twist and mean something that it doesn’t mean. It is a great verse, but only when it is used correctly.

Let’s start off with what this verse does not mean. This verse does not mean that when we have a big decision to make that we go and ask a “multitude” of people until we get the answer that we want. There are those that want to believe that’s what this verse means. They already have their decision made, and they just want to find someone that agrees with them. That isn’t seeking counsel; it’s seeking agreement. That is not what this verse is saying at all.

Now, let us look at what the verse does means. When the verse states, “In the multitude of counsellors there is safety,” it means that we ought to have multiple counsellors in our life. The purpose for this is that one person probably won’t be able to help us in all areas. Our spiritual counselor that helps us with our walk with God might not be able to help us with our financial budget. The one who advises us on our health might not be the same person that would give us guidance in buying a house and vice versa.

That is why we need to have a “multitude of counsellors” in our life. It is for our own good, and the Lord knows that. That is why He put it in His Word. It is for our safety as the verse says. Do you have people in your life that can help you? Life is far too complex for one to successfully go through it on their own. That is why we need to have our counsellors in place. Let us be sure that we have those in place that we can go to for guidance. In addition, let us be sure to listen and heed their guidance as long as it is not contrary to God’s Word. The counsellors do us no good if we do not listen to them. If you do not have them, ask God to help you find good counsellors today.
