Abraham Stood Yet Before the Lord

Genesis 18:22, “And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the Lord.”

In this passage of Scripture, God tells Abraham that He is going to destroy the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Abraham’s nephew, Lot, and his family live in the city of Sodom. Though Sodom was a wicked city and many people probably would not have cared if the cities were destroyed, Abraham did care. Abraham began to plead for the cities. He started asking God if He would spare the city for fifty righteous people. God said that He would not destroy the city for fifty righteous. Abraham continued to ask and plead for God not to destroy the cities until He asked to spare it for just ten righteous people.

The Bible does not say exactly how many were in Lot’s family, but I believe we can conclude that he had at least 10. There’s Lot and his wife (2). Genesis 19:12 says, “ And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place.” We see he had sons (2+) and daughters (2+). In Genesis 19:14, we read that Lot has sons-in-law which is plural (2+). Genesis 19:15 says, “And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here.” Many people believe that these daughters were his daughters that were not married yet. So we see Lot, Lot’s wife, sons, married daughters and their husbands, single daughters for a total of at least ten. This gives us some insight as to why Abraham stopped at ten people. He thought at the very least that Lot would have his own family righteous, but he did not.

This is where Abraham stepped in. God was just going to wipe these cities off the face of the earth, but Abraham interceded. Abraham was the only one standing between his family and destruction. Christian, I’m sure you know many people that have made wrong choices in their lives and re going down the wrong path. Possibly, you are the only one that is standing between that person and destruction. Plead with God on their behalf. Let us be like Abraham. Let us stand before the Lord and ask God to spare them. Ask God to work on their heart, so they will get right. Someone’s life may be depending on you, and they don’t even know it yet.
