Lamentations 3:51, “Mine eye affecteth mine heart because of all the daughters of my city.”
This verse is one that every one of us must make personal. We all must realize that what we look at affects our heart. This can be a good thing, but it can also be a bad thing.
Let us look at the bad first. When we look at things that we are not to look at, it affects our heart. Our heart starts becoming more and more like the world and less and less like Christ. Most people that do such wicked things did not just wake up that day and decide to do it. It all started with a seed that was planted in their heart and in their mind. Seeds can enter through our eyes. What we look at will eventually affect our actions.
Now, let us look at the good side of this. If we plant good seeds into our heart through our eyes, it will bring forth good actions. This is why churches encourage things like missions trips. It allows us to see the mission field for ourself and see the need for others. It will affect our heart in a positive way. This is another reason we ought to read our Bibles every day. When we look upon the Word of God, it will be begin to affect our heart in a right way.
Throughout our life, our eyes will affect our heart. There’s nothing we can do about it. It is up to us though to choose if it will affect us for the better or for the worse. Let us purpose today that we will guard our eyes from wickedness. Let us strive to only allow good things into our eyes, so that only good things will affect our heart.
